On average 7.2 working days per employee were lost to absence in the UK in 2003, an increase of 6% from 2002.
The overall cost of workplace absence was £11.6bn in 2003.
To cover the salaries of absent individuals and the resulting overtime and temporary cover translates to £475 per employee.

In July 2000 the Government in conjunction with the Health and Safety Commission launched a strategy “Securing Health Together” setting specific targets in reducing ill health and sickness absence. The areas stated as a priority to be addressed are musculoskeletal disorders and stress. The report stated;-
